Step-by-Step Instructions for Reviving Dehydrated Sourdough Starter:
Materials Needed:
One Packet of Gonick Farms Dehydrated Starter
Water (preferably filtered)
Bread Flour
Clean bowl or jar
Spoon or spatula
Scale or measuring cups
A lid to cover jar loosely
Instructions:
STEP 1/ DAY 1:
You’ve received your new dehydrated starter! You’re now one step closer to your sourdough baking journey. In your envelope you will find your dehydrated starter. Place 10g of starter into a clean small jar. In the jar with your 10g of starter, add 3 tablespoons of filtered room temperature water (avoid distilled or reverse osmosis, as those lack the necessary minerals). Wait one hour.
After an hour, add 2 tablespoons of bread flour. Stir very well, ensuring there are no clumps of flour and the sides of the jar have been scraped. Place a rubber band, add a lid loosely, and wait 24 hours.
STEP 2/ DAY 2:
We’re now going to give your starter its first feed. Notice there might be bubbles and activity already in the jar! Add two tablespoons of unbleached bread flour, and one tablespoon of room temperature filtered water. Mix well, adjust the rubber band, cover, and let rest for 24 hours.
STEP 3/ DAY 3:
Repeat the same as step 2. Add two tablespoons of unbleached bread flour, and one tablespoon of room temperature filtered water. Mix well, adjust the rubber band, cover, and let rest for 24 hours.
STEP 4/ DAY 4:
We are going to give a bigger feed today! Add half a cup of unbleached bread flour, and a ¼ cup of filtered room temperature water. Mix it very well as we added a lot more flour this feeding, so ensure there’s no pockets of flour. Scrape down the sides of the jar, adjust the rubber band, cover, and let sit for 24 hours.
STEP 5/DAY 5:
At this point, you should have had a lot of growth! At this point, you can move your starter to a larger jar, and feed it again with half a cup of unbleached bread flour, and a ¼ cup of filtered room temperature water. After this day, you should be good to go to start feeding it as you normally would, whether that’s a 1:1:1 or 1:2:2. If you have not experienced much rise up to this point, keep in mind depending on the environment this could take a few extra days.
That’s it! Enjoy your starter, bake some bread, and have fun!
Tips:
Use room-temperature water and flour for the best results.
Keep your starter in a warm spot (like near the stove or on the counter) to encourage growth.
If your starter is sluggish, it may need a couple more days of feeding to become fully active.
Once active, you can use this revived sourdough starter in any sourdough recipe!
